Utah Backpacking
GRAND STAIRCASE BACKCOUNRTY, CANYON AND MESA MAGIC
April 27 - May 2, 2008 $1,600
Southern
Utahs famously beautiful canyon country includes some of
the most unusual landscapes on Earth. A few miles north of the
Arizona line, well explore one of the most remote little-known
sections of the Grand
Staircase-Escalante National Monument - a colorful and rugged
world of deep canyons, high mesas, arches, sand and slickrock
punctuated by twisted junipers and big vistas. Hackberry Canyon
and a little-known section of the upper Paria River are within
this wild and magnificent area.
Warm sunny days with cool to chilly nights are typical, but we
must be prepared for brief spring storms that occasionally water
the high desert. Spring wildflowers are blooming, and most of
this fairly strenuous trip is off-trail. The trip base
is Cedar City, Utah. This trip is offered only in even-numbered
years.
REDROCK CANYONS OF THE WILD ESCALANTE
Utah $1,700 May 4-10, 2008
The awesome and beautiful “Slickrock Canyon Country” of southern Utah is wilderness at its best. The Escalante River, a tributary of the Colorado, has cut a magnificent canyon system through the colorful sedimentary rocks of the Colorado Plateau. Sheer, red canyon walls and a variety of spectacular geologic features including arches, alcoves, and rincons characterize this wilderness. We’ll hike along and through the Escalante River and side canyons—ribbons of cool water, flanked by a lush growth of cottonwood, oak, box-elder, willow, and grass. Wildflowers abound on spring trips; autumn colors explode in October. There’ll be plenty of time for exploration of side canyons, and we’ll spend at least one night camped on the unique slickrock desert above, where views of the entire landscape are utterly spectacular. We’ll also see ancient Anasazi rock art and ruins.
Mild to warm sunny days and cool nights are the rule. We rate this trip as moderate to fairly strenuous with much off-trail travel, and its base is Cedar City, Utah.
NOTE: In even numbered years, we plan to run spring trips in the Escalante and Grand Staircase areas, plus a fall trip in the Grand Canyon.
